The Oldest Landmark Gone

The people of this village were astonished Tuesday to learn by telegram from North Augusta of the death of our aged and respected citizen, Augustus Boyd. The family is fast passing away. Mr. Boyd was born on the farm now occupied by Adam Hurlbert and formerly by Joshua Huntington just outside the limits of this village on the 11th of July, 1817, and lived here all his life time. Mrs. Boyd was also well advanced in years at the time of her death about a year and a half ago, and since then Mr. Boyd spent the most of his time visiting various relatives. All the members of the family to which he belonged have passed away with the exception of two sisters, Mrs. Edmonds, living at Rochelle, Ill., and Mrs. Henry Beach of Omaha, Neb. In referring to the early days of Kemptville Mr. Boyd has frequently stated that his late friend, Ambrose Clothier, was the first white male child born here and he (Mr. Boyd) was the second. Before the construction of the railroad here and before buggies had made their appearance, or even highways had been properly laid out, Mr. Boyd is said to have carried the mail on his back from Kemptville to Prescott.
