In-Depth #3 Topics:
The topics for week three come from chapter four. They are as follows...
Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP)
Most traditional computers have only a single CPU. Parallel Processing
uses computers with 2 or more processors. One of the most common types
of parallel processing is SMP.
Some places to start are:
Flash Memory Cards
While a computers memory is volatile (it erases when the computer is turned
off), there is a different type of memory that is becoming more common
especially in digital cameras and palm computers. This memory is
often called Flash memory and comes on small cards. Information is
semi-permanent in this memory.
Fast Processors and Moore's Law
A new type of computer is becoming popular. These are small enough to
fit in your hand and are commonly called palm PC or handheld computers.
They have limited software available yet. Most software available is for
organizing you address book, appointments, etc so these computers are also
called Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). Find out what is new with these
small computers and if you think they are useful. Here are some places
to start.
Firewire or 1394 ports
This is the newest, high-speed port available on some PC's. What
is it used for and why do we need it?
