Internship Waiver Request

A waiver of the internship requirement can be granted in two cases:

  • Students who are working full time in IT positions that would satisfy the internship.
  • Students who are working full time in positions that prevent them from completing the internship.

The CIS Department views the internship as a valuable stepping stone for students entering IT careers. For adult learners who are working full time, the internship often provides a bridge from their current position into an IT-related position within their organization. But, the CIS Department recognizes that the intenship does not provide a benefit to students currently employed in IT positions. For individuals who would have to leave a permanent job to complete the internship, the economic hardships this causes outweigh the benefits of the internship. When it is feasible for students to complete a paid or comminity service internship, we incourage them to do this.

Students receiving a waiver of the internship requirement will have to complete four additional credits of a CIS elective or concentration course to replace the require four credits of internship.

To request a waiver, simple send email to the internship coordinator, Tom Gibbons - tgibbons@css.edu, with the following informaiton.

  • Student's Name
  • Student's Campus (Duluth, St. Paul, St. Cloud, Brainerd)
  • Student's Advisor
  • Breif statement describing the reasons for the waiver. Examples:
    • I work fulltime at Acme Inc. as an explosives expert. There is not an oportunity for me to complete the internship within Acme and it is not feasible for me to quit this position in order to complete the internship. My time commitments dues to work, school, and family prevent me from completing a community service internship.
    • I work full time at Widgit Inc as a software analyst. My position entails working with a team to design and build software widgets and this work would certainly satisfy the requirements of the internship.

You should receive confirmation of the waiver within a week via email. If you have questions concerning this, please email Tom Gibbons (tgibbons@css.edu) or call him (218-723-6294.
