Minnesota Power (Allete) - MN Power typically has some very good summer and Fall IT internships. They generally post them in Jan/Feb but sometimes as late as May. They have some information on internships online

While they are a power company, they also maintain the largest high speed network in northern Minnesota. The have started a business unit devoted to web services! Note: in 2005, MN Power sold its high speed network and web business, know as Enventis, to HickoryTech. See press release. I am still waiting to hear if Enventis will offer internships to students (Fall 2006)

General Purpose:
Under supervision, provides technical analysis, programming, and support to users to include design, development, modification, problem resolution, documentation, and short-term planning to meet business objectives. Design and implement relational database structures, applications, interfaces, and reports to achieve business requirements.

Education:
Applicant should be nearing completion of sophomore year of bachelor degree program. Major in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Management of Information Systems & Technology. Coursework in web applications which interface with databases is desirable. Minimum GPA 2.8.

Experience:
Related work experience desired.

Special Requirements:
Familiarity with several of the following: Java, C/C++, Web Page Development (HTML, ASP, JSP, Java Script), Structured Query Language (SQL), PL/SQL, Visual Basic, .NET, Object Oriented Programming, Relational Database Modeling, XML/XSLT, Unix Shell Scripting, Unix (Solaris), Microsoft Windows 2000/XP, and Microsoft Office. Strong interpersonal and communication skills required to establish and maintain positive working relationships. Applicants must be flexible and able to handle multiple changing priorities. Also be able to work independently or as part of a group.

Internship duration:
Fall 2007 with continuation likely through 2007 and beyond. 15-20 hours per week during the school term; 40 hours per week during summer break. Hours of work: Between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. flexible with school schedule.

Salary: $13.50 per hour

General Purpose:
Under supervision, provides technical analysis and support to users in Distribution Operations to include analysis, design, testing, problem resolution and short-term planning to meet business objectives.  Work closely with the operational team, as well as various members of the IT staff.  This position will assist in many operational support tasks including but not limited to:  hardware/software/application support and maintenance, documentation, as well as working with internal IT groups on projects and new system implementations.  Focus on improving productivity through the use of new technology.

Education: Sophomore or Junior year of bachelor degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Systems, or Management of Information Systems & Technology or Business Administration with an emphasis on Information Systems.  Education in Geographic Information Systems is a plus, but not required.  GPA: 2.8 or higher. 

Experience:
Related work experience desired.  Strong interpersonal and communication skills required to establish and maintain positive working relationships.  Ability to work independently or as a part of a group.  Flexibility and adaptability to handle multiple changing priorities.  Strong analytical skills and problem solving abilities are required.  Technical skills related to information systems are desired.  Familiarity with structured query language and experience with microsoft office applications important.

Duration of Internship and Hours of Work:
January 2008 through May 2008; continuation possible through remainder of 2008.  Hours flexible with school schedule.  15-20 hours per week during the school term and 40 hours per week during summer.
