Channels - Selections - Masks

Alpha Channels are any additional channels (besides the standard RGB,Red, Green, and Blue channels) added through the Channels Pallet.

Layer Masks are black & white fields shown to the right of layers in the Layers Pallet. Whatever is white in the mask shows up in the layer, while whatever is black is hidden.

You can convert a Channel to a Selection or a Selection to a Channel

Channel to Selection: a channel can be converted into a selection by one of two methods. Either go to the Select menu and choose Load Selection or Ctrl-click on the Channel.

Selection to Channel: A selection can be saved as a channel. After the selection is made, create a new channel (using the channel pallet) then hit the "Del" key to fill the entire selection with the background color (you may have to change the background color to white).

You can convert a Mask into a Selection or a Selection to a Mask

Mask to Selection: right click on the mask, choose Set Selection to Layer Mask.

Selection to Mask: After the selection is made, from the menu choose Layer -> Add Layer Mask -> Reveal Selection.
