CIS 2041 : Computer Graphic Design

Project Two

 Due: Thursday, March 18

Critique Day: Tuesday, March 23

For this second project using the Adobe Photoshop software, we want you to combine at least two images to create a sense of motion. We also want you to get out and take NEW pictures. No vacation photos, no family portraits--shoot new photos with this assignment in mind. When you have this specific project in mind, it will direct your shooting in a fundamentally different way. You will shoot FOR the project, and not just think about assembly AFTER the photos have been taken. Also keep in mind the basic photographic principles outlined in class several weeks ago (line, shape, texture, balance, rule of thirds, etc.)

Use some of the abstraction techniques demonstrated by students in class last week.

Many of the presentations last week dealt with creating a sense of motion in this work (golf ball motion streaks, exploding text/photos, etc.) That is what we want you to do with this second project--take still photos and combine them in such a way to convey a sense of motion in the work. If you find other motion illusion techniques other than the student presentations, you may use those as well. The point is, we want you to draw inspiration from the student presentations. Unlike several of the presentations, we do NOT want you to work with text in this assignment.

The work should be purely visual, and in the photographic style (in other words, we do not want you to create illustrations with photoshop (drawing palm trees, brick walls, 3-D 7-up dots, etc.)

This project will be printed and mounted on mount board. Details will follow on this. We want you to tape an envelope to the back of the mount board with all the photos you used to create Project Two. You must also save an electronic version of the project into the class dropbox, but you will be graded on the printed version of the project.

We also want you to attach a written narrative (similar to project one) that not only explains WHAT you did, but WHY you did it. Remember, you are using Photoshop to create "art" and that means using your chosen medium to create a feeling, make a statement, etc. The mounted, finished product is due during class on Thursday, March 18. Critique day will follow on Tuesday, March 23. Late projects will be penalized.

Printing and mounting instructions:

We suggest you print your project to the color laser printer using high gloss laser paper (available from Tom in class). You may also use your own color injet printer if you can print high quality color images.

To print to the color laser printer, select it under the printer name, "TOWMICROCOLORL". You should also select printer properties and change the paper source to Manual Feed. Then, go tell the TA at the desk that you printed to the color printer and she/he will send your printout through. Go to the printer, wait until the display tells you to insert paper, and then put your glossy paper on the manual feed tray (do not push any buttons on the printer, even though it tells you to.)

To mount your photo, first purchase mounting board from the bookstore. Use the roto-trimmer in the photo lab to trim the white space from your printout. Use either stick glue or double sided tape to attach your photo to the center of the mount board. Write your name on the back of the mount board and attach your original photo (b/w printouts of digital photos) to the back of the mount board with an envelope.
