Gross
Anatomy Laboratory
(This web site
has pictures of dissected cadavers.
If you aren't
interested in seeing dissected muscles,
please do not
continue. Thank you.)
Graduate
students are required to take a functional anatomy course during the Fall
Semester that utilizes cadavers to access hands-on study and dissection
experiences. During the Spring Semester, the students will continue to
dissect the cadavers in the muscle testing course. Presently, the Department
of Exercise Physiology procures four cadavers per academic year thus allowing
for a dissection experience of four students per cadaver. As the program
grows, the department will increase the number of cadavers accordingly.
With the
above pictures, the students are identifying specific muscles by origin,
insertion, and function. You may note that the right aspect of the cadaver's
hip region is presented in the photograph. The students are concerned particularly
with the origin of the hip flexors and abductors (such as the tensor fascia
latae, sartorius, and rectus femoris). The hands-on opportunity to assess
'what is what' is beyond description when predisposed otherwise to a study
of anatomy only by a textbook.
