The
Veterinary Genetics Laboratory has
launched a multi-year project to investigate canine genetics on a
breed-by-breed basis. Phase one of the project involves developing genome
screening panels based on the genetic markers mapped by the canine genome
project labs. Phase two will apply those panels to breed specific databases to
establish a breed norm for each genetic marker. This normal or control data
will allow for future studies to find trait or disease genes. Crucial to the
success of phase two is a DNA database for Spinoni Italiani. A minimum of 50
dogs who are unrelated at the first generation (no sires or dams in common) are
needed to determine the genetic profile of the breed. We are asking for
assistance from owners of Spinoni Italiani in providing cheek swab samples and
limited pedigree information. The DNA and information are held in strict
confidence and the collection of cheek cell samples is non-invasive. As samples
are received, the DNA will be extracted from the swab brush, tested and stored.
The genetic information will be grouped together and analyzed accordingly.
Results on individual dogs will not be available. We do, however, have a web
page with information regarding our progress and results of the complete study
will be submitted for publication. The collection kit and testing are free.
This canine genetics research is supported by the proceeds of the DNA parentage
testing. If you are interested in participating in this research, please
contact the Veterinary Genetics Lab for a DNA collection kit by calling
530-754-8765 or contacting them online at their website. The URL for the kit
request is: http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/requestform/.
You may also write them at, Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, University of
California, One Shields Ave., Davis, CA 95616 to request a kit. Please take the
time to do this.
