Ethics and Behavior

Ethics has joined the constellation of important factors in managerial and leadership behaviors. At various times in the history of management, ethics has been considered an inconvenience to successful manipulative strategy, an optional reference for decision making, and most recently a core competency of both workers and managers. For example, in a Korn-Ferry survey of CEO failures, ethical malfeasance was the second most identified factor in leadership failure. Almost daily the news presents unsettling reports of abuses of power, disregard of human welfare, violation of employee rights, and so on. Even without these flagrant examples, the work of a manager invariably holds multiple decisions each day, most of which have an ethical consequence to them.
